$2.91M Cigna COVID-19 test class action settlement

Cigna Health and Life Insurance Co. agreed to pay nearly $2.91 million to resolve claims it underpaid COVID-19 test claims.

The Cigna COVID-19 test class action settlement benefits individuals who submitted a claim to Cigna for reimbursement from an ERISA healthcare benefits plan for a Covid-19 test obtained between March 27, 2020 and prior to September 1, 2023, and where Cigna approved payment for that test at less than the full amount billed by the healthcare provider.

According to the Cigna COVID-19 test class action lawsuit, Cigna Healthcare failed to reimburse plan members for the full cost of COVID-19 tests. Instead, the insurer allegedly reimbursed members at a lower rate, leaving them to pay the difference.

The COVID-19 class action lawsuit claims Cigna’s actions violated the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), a federal law that regulates employee benefit plans such as health insurance.

Cigna has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $2.91 million class action settlement to resolve the allegations.

Under the terms of the Cigna Health settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the amount they were underpaid for COVID-19 tests.

Class members who received reimbursement of $500 or less for their tests will receive a proportional share of the net settlement fund based on the amount they were underpaid.

Those who paid more than $500 for a Covid-19 test covered by the settlement should submit a claim form and supporting documentation to the Settlement Administrator for a similar type of payment if they were underpaid above $500.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is April 29, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the Cigna COVID-19 test class action settlement is scheduled for May 29, 2025.

No claim form is required for class members who received reimbursement of $500 or less for their tests.

Class members who received reimbursement of more than $500 for their tests must submit a valid claim form and supporting documentation by April 29, 2025.

Who’s Eligible

The settlement benefits Cigna plan members and dependents who submitted a claim to Cigna for reimbursement of a COVID-19 test between March 27, 2020, and Sept. 1, 2023, and whose healthcare plan was governed by ERISA.

Potential Award

Up to $500 or more depending on class member category.

Proof of Purchase

For class members who spent more than $500 on any COVID-19 test covered by the settlement, supporting documentation must include a receipt or similar document from the healthcare service provider or its billing handler and/or a record from a bank, credit or debit card, or other commonly used payment platform, which shows the following information:

The information in the supporting documentation must not contradict the claims data on file provided by Cigna to the settlement administrator and must not contradict the information provided in the claim form.
